Barn Conversion,
South Oxfordshire

Brief

To take a dilapidated timber framed barn and transform into a superb new home suitable for a couple with adult children/visiting families.

Challenges

To maximise the flexibility of the space within the constraints of the historic structure, to exploit the stunning views across the Oxfordshire landscape and provide an open-plan entertaining space.

Solution

A plan was developed with the clients that explored the nature of extending vistas through the building to the landscape beyond. A dilapidated lean-to structure was replaced, including a nine-metre wide uninterrupted sliding glass facade offering dramatic views of the countryside and incoming weather. Careful attention to detail, starting with retaining as much of the historic timber frame as possible, allowed for a modern home to emerge within the framework of the original structure.
