Brief
To extend, remodel and competely refurbish a run-down property on the outskirts of a market town.
Challenges
To double the size of the property, whilst retaining the characteristic spaces of the original. To create a generous family home which no longer looks as if it has been extended numerous times, but instead reads as a cohesive whole, both inside and out.
Solution
Strip away the most recent single storey extensions, which were unattractive and at single storey, didn’t provide sufficient floor area to justify their footprint on the plot. A comprehensive facelift of the original dwelling marries the new and the old in a seamless manner. Consistent material treatment inside and out provide a unified quality to the new and old parts of the property. A sequence of double height, galleried spaces link the various parts of the home together to form a rich and varied backdrop to family life and entertaining.
