Music Room Extension, Rotherfield Greys

BRIEF

The latest addition to a 16th Century, Grade II listed Farmhouse, already extended over many years, to provide a generous space for entertaining and music recitals.

CHALLENGES

The historic property had been extended numerous times over its long history. Local authority planners and conservation officers were at first concerned that further extension could detract from the special character for which the property is listed.
The consented scheme (2012) was a result of detailed negotiations with the local authority South Oxfordshire District Council, during which a statement of significance was prepared for the original historic building, which informed a significant, yet sympathetic extension that was acceptable in listed building terms.

SOLUTION

A new vaulted music room touches the existing listed building very lightly, with a narrow glazed link structure creating a beautiful courtyard between the new and the old parts.
Set within landscaped gardens, a generous bay window and fully glazed gable provide superb backdrops to any musical performance, whilst the room itself offers ample space and facilities for entertaining.
