Garden Room, Hurley-on-Thames

BRIEF

To provide a Grade II listed property with a new rear hallway and a light & comfortable living space from within which to enjoy the surrounding gardens.

CHALLENGES

To secure listed building consent for the works, WBA was required to demonstrate a deep understanding of the historic property, and that in removing an unattractive conservatory, there was an opportunity to extend the property in the finest manner, whilst conserving the special characteristics and architectural heritage of the listed building and its neighbours.

SOLUTION

Early engagement with the planners and conservation officers at the local authority allowed detailed negotiations and the consideration of a number of options for the parts of the original walls to be retained.<br /> A beautifuly crafted garden room of high quality materials such as oak, handmade clay brick, natural knapped flint walling and a glorious pre-weathered copper roof has replaced a rather dilapidated off-the shelf conservatory, enhancing the enjoyment of the house and garden alike.
