Our work can be broadly arranged over three categories: bespoke family homes (unique new-builds, extensions & remodelling), residential developments (2-200 dwellings), and rural diversification involving change of use of existing rural building stock, heritage assets or within sensitive settings.
However we have also undertaken exciting projects for awrd-winning livery stables, museums, churches and community buildings. Through our conversion expertise, we have worked on a vast range of building types including historic granaries, dovecotes and barns as well as Victorian asylums and water towers. We thrive on an exciting mix of different projects with a passion for great architecture – big & small!
Allan Woodfield and Kevin Brady are both RIBA Chartered Architects with over fifty years experience between them. Their work together over twenty years has been recognised at the highest national levels, including RIBA Awards and short-listing in the Crown Estate Award -one of the RIBA’s highest conservation honours celebrated alongside the Stirling Prize. All members of our practice have successfully undertaken formal RIBA accredited higher education at UK Universities.
Every project is director-led from inception to completion: one director may be tasked with managing the design and detailing process of the project as it progresses through the various statutory applications, whilst colleagues will provide critical review within the studio. The philosophy of the practice is one of collaboration, both within the studio and working with the valued expertise of the wider consultant team.
We believe that the success of any project is reliant on a constant dialogue and consultation with both the client and other interested parties , from initial project brief to successful building handover. Our role is to listen to and interpret the client’s initial brief and aspirations, and to encourage their ongoing participation throughout the project process. Communication is key to understanding thedevelopment of any design, and we utilise a wide variety of media from traditional sketches and drawings, through physical models and computer generated images to assist the dialogue.
Our approach to every project involves a thorough analysis of the site and surrounding context, together with the client brief, budget and programme. Such an approach avoids any tendency to fall back on a ‘house style’; instead we strive to identify the specific site constraints and opportunities enabling fresh and innovative solutions that are rooted in the context of each unique location. We also embrace a holistic approach to sustainability from the outset, harnessing passive energy measures before active technologies wherever possible
CHARTERED PRACTICE & PROFESSIONALISM
Only architectural practices that meet a strict eligibility criteria can register as an RIBA Chartered Practice. They are committed to excellence in design and customer service. That’s why the RIBA only promotes accredited Chartered Practices to clients. Our continued development programme ensures that we remain alert to ever changing technologies, planning and building legislation and health and safety regulations. At each stage of the process we are mindful of the project budget and, through continuous interrogation of the design, strive to deliver added value, identifying hidden and often exciting opportunities.
'The redevelopment of our house was a significant exercise which was daunting at times, particularly as we had never attempted anything like it before. From our first meeting with WBA it was clear that we had found the right firm of architects to design our home and help guide us through the process. The initial design incorporated all the key aspects of our brief yet contained many flourishes and clever solutions to practical issues that have made it something special.'-
'Neither of the architects were precious about their ideas and were very collaborative in their approach. This helped build a strong working relationship with us and our contractor and was key to making our build a success. It was reassuring to know that we could rely on their expertise throughout the process. Their guidance (and patience!) was invaluable. The end result is a house that is stunning to look at and practical to live in. Whether or not I would ever do it all again I do not know. But if I did I would involve Woodfield Brady again without hesitation.'-
'We appointed Woodfield Brady to give us some ideas as to how we could join an adjoining barn to our house. I think we had something of a functional link in our heads at outset but WBA created something much more than that and he really created a flow which enabled us to join our kitchen and dining rooms together with a new sitting room in the barn. Their eye for space enabled us to build a high ceiling into the link area which has created a light and airy feel throughout and a real flow to the house. We are delighted. At all times, we found Woodfield Brady polite, informative and good listeners. They are thoughtful and talented. We would most certainly recommend them to others.'-
